College Football: Week 3 Picks Against the Spread

September 13, 2018

After a horrible start, a rebound was in order.

A 7-3 record in week 2 is a nice bounce back. Season to date, PigskinGrind is 10-9, a winning record albeit not too impressive. Still, we are pretty happy to be back in the win column.

Because of Hurricane Florence off the Southeastern seaboard, some games, despite time changes or postponements, will not be touched.

Let's get right at it. There is one NFL game in this week's picks. (Picks in bold)

Georgia -31.5 v Middle Tennessee State

If Vanderbilt can spank the Blue Raiders with 35 points, how many will the Bulldogs put up?  This one will be over by the half.

UTEP +30.5 at Tennessee

It's not that I think the Miners are a very good team. I do think Tennessee will probably call off the dogs which should allow for some garbage time scores. The Vols host Florida the following week. Will they be caught sleeping? Probably not, but they may nap at some point in the game.

Maryland -15.5 v Temple

Maryland looks very improved while Temple looks just awful, losing to Villanova and Buffalo. Yikes.

Ball State +30.5 at Indiana

An instate rivalry is always ripe for an upset. The Cardinals stayed in the game at Notre Dame before finally succumbing 24-16. Exacting revenge against another Indiana school is surely in order.

LSU +9.5 at Auburn

LSU is underrated. Auburn is a very good team. This one is too close to call so take the points!

Oregon -41.5 v San Jose State

If UC Davis can hang 44 points (and win) on the Spartans, what will the Ducks do? This game may be over by the first quarter.

Oregon State +3.5 v Nevada

Anytime a Pac-12 team faces a Group of Five team that is laying the points, well, jump on it. The Beavers will pull off the mild upset here.

Ole Miss +20.5 at Alabama

The Tide should win but Ole Miss will play tough and score some points. Alabama always has "one of those games" that does not live up to its fans standards. This may be the one that scares the fans a little.

Louisiana Monroe +26.5 at Texas A&M

The Aggies will win but they travel to Alabama the following week. They may sleepwalk through the first half before they wake up and finally put the Warhawks away.

New York Jets -2.5 v Miami

I have a theory about Miami playing in cold weather states like New England or New York: the Dolphins do not fare very well. I do not have the stats but more often then not, Miami does not cover the spread. Jets quarterback Sam Donald is the latest darling of Broadway. With a win and a lot of confidence under his belt, I like the Jets to win in front of a very fired up crowd.
