Pigskin Grind went 6-of-10 last week which brings this season's totals to 51-of-90. This week more highly ranked teams are going to get their hearts broken, especially in the Big Ten and Big 12.
We avoided the SEC simply because the West is too volatile—with so much parity in one division, why risk it?
As always, good luck. My picks are in bold.
Bowling Green +6.5 at Akron
In the last two seasons, Akron is 4-7 against the spread when it is the favorite. Granted, Bowling Green's defense is a sieve, but its offense is superb. Akron may win, but the Falcons will keep it close—they have had two weeks off to prepare for this contest.
No. 19 Clemson -22.5 at Wake Forest
Wake Forest is a hot mess. Its offense is ranked 125th in the country, averaging 14.8 points per game. Clemson has the nation's 10th best scoring defense and its offense averages 32.3 points per game.
Louisiana Lafayette -15.5 at New Mexico State
If Idaho can beat the Aggies by 12 points… need I say more?
No. 23 Marshall -19.5 at Southern Miss
Yes, the Thundering Herd have to win by three touchdowns but consider this: Southern Miss lost to Marshall 61-13 last year and this year's Marshall is better than last year's.
Colorado State -16.5 v Hawai'i
Hawai'i was covering the spread consistently in the beginning of the season but now it is falling apart. Meanwhile, the Rams are winning Mountain West games by double digits.
Iowa -1.5 at Minnesota
Minnesota is bowl eligible but its schedule is also back loaded—I don't see a win in the next four weeks. The Hawkeyes are simply a better team than the Golden Gophers so a two-point margin of victory seems like a slam dunk.
No. 7 Michigan State -3.5 v No. 13 Ohio State
That half point could become a problem if this game comes down to a field goal but I do not think it will. Michigan State's defense is as advertised. on the flip side, Ohio State's defense allowed an offensively inept Penn State to score 24 points.
No. 9 Kansas State +5.5 at No. 6 TCU
Kansas State is undefeated on the road and TCU is undefeated at home. They both beat Oklahoma with similar scores but Kansas State did it on the road. The underdog covers in a very tight game.
No. 10 Baylor +5.5 at No. 16 Oklahoma
When Baylor is getting points, take Baylor. The Bears have won the last two out of three against the Sooners. Basically, the Bears are not afraid of Oklahoma.
Georgia Southern -11.5 at Texas State
Georgia Southern has been a great cover team all season. Are the Eagles for real? They lost to Georgia Tech 42-38 and beat Savannah State 83-9. The Bobcats should keep it close early in the game but the Eagles will tire them out with their superb running game.
