College Football Pick 'Em Week 4: Lisa Horne's Picks Include Two Upsets

September 18, 2014

Last week was not a very good week for Pigskin Grind. After hitting  70 percent of my picks through two weeks, I hit fifty percent on week 3's picks. Pigskin Grind's cumulative total is 12-of-20. Let's make it up!

This week there are two upset alert games, both courtesy of the Pac-12. Last week I correctly picked an upset of Texas Tech by Arkansas.

Obligatory disclaimer: Pigskin Grind is not a tout service. All spreads listed are for entertainment purposes only—due to flucuations, these lines may or may not reflect real time Las Vegas odds.

Kansas State +8.5 v Auburn

I have a lot of faith in head coach Bill Snyder at home but this game's outcome all depends on whether or not the Wildcats can stop Auburn's tremendous running game. Kansas State is ranked No. 20 in rushing defense and Auburn's rushing offense is ranked No. 7. Is one of these teams a pretender?

Take the points and Kansas State*

No. 8 LSU -9.5 v Mississippi State

Let's see now... this game starts at 7 p.m. local time which means Tiger fans will be nice and hammered by kickoff time. Good luck with that, Bulldogs.

Lay the points and take LSU

Northern Illinois +14.5 at Arkansas

I like Arkansas' offense but its defense is fairly soft. This game will be closer than the experts think, especially if Arkansas is caught looking ahead to its date with Texas A&M at Jerry's Palace next week.

Take the points and Northern Illinois

Hawai'i +6.5 at Colorado

Hawai'i has been a covering machine for three straight weeks so why not ride the 'Bows until they run out of gas? Colorado can put points on the board but it also cannot stop other teams from doing the same.

Take the points and Hawai'i

No. 18 Missouri -13.5 v Indiana

An SEC team spotting a perpetually underperforming Big Ten team less than two touchdowns? Done.

Lay the points, take Missouri

No. 22 Clemson +19.5 at No. 1 Florida State

I had the Seminoles beating Clemson by 20 points before quarterback Jameis Winston's half-game suspension was announced. Now that I know Winston will only be playing one half, I like Clemson to cover.

Take the points and pray Clemsoning is past history

Pittsburgh -5.5 v Iowa

I hate to pick on Big Ten teams but Iowa does not look very good and Pittsburgh looks very good. Iowa may also overlook Pitt because its conference play at Pudue begins the following week.

Lay the points and bet against the B1G

Utah +5.5 at Michigan

Utah is on a roll and Michigan looks like a team about to lose its head coach. Beating Miami (OH) 34-10 is no cause to celebrate, Wolverine fans. The Utes look like a very dangerous team but they have not been road tested.  This looks like a close game. UPSET ALERT.

Take the points and Utah

East Carolina -2.5 North Carolina

If head coach Ruffin McNeill keeps this up, he may win Coach of the Year honors. The Pirates are for real. Last week ECU beat Virginia Tech 28-21 and I don't think this team will be hungover when it faces a very average-looking Tar Heel team.

Lay the points and trust in Ruffin

California +10.5 at Arizona

The Arizona Wildcats have a potent offense but so does Cal. The Wildcats' defense does not look very stout while the Bears' does. For what it's worth, Arizona opened as 17-point favorites—those who have watched Cal and Arizona football know what's up. UPSET ALERT.

Take the points and Cal
